Respect Councillor Quits Party

03 November 2005

GEORGE Galloway’s Respect party has been rocked by a new bombshell as it emerged their leading councillor has resigned to rejoin Labour.

Councillor Muhammad Ghulam Mortuza, who represents Spitafields and Banglatown, resigned from Respect on Tuesday, just five months after he joined them from Labour.

A Respect spokesman said: “This is probably the only time in history that a rat has gone back to a sinking ship.”

But Respect’s Bethnal Green and Bow MP George Galloway said: “I’m very grateful to Cllr Mortuza for all the help he gave in the General Election campaign.

“I trust that he has made the right decision.”

The 56-year-old councillor, who is the longest-serving member on Tower Hamlets council, had been a Labour die-hard since 1986.

But he was courted by Mr Galloway in the run up to May’s General Election and he joined Respect in June.

He then sat as an Independent for three months before becoming of the two-man Respect group at the Town Hall in September.
